Reverberation chamber design can be relatively straight forward. The device(s) under test and/or research helps to define the anechoic volume. The low frequency of interest defines the wedge depth. There are a multitude of other factors that can trip up the project’s success. These include space planning, the site survey, sound isolation, HVAC, access, vibration, building systems, and more. A brief tour of the who what when where why and how, with examples from some projects, is presented.

He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and the Audio
Engineering Society, a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and a member of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers.

Mr. Shaw holds the Kenward S. Oliphant Memorial Fellowship in Acoustical Engineering, awarded by the Consulting Engineer Association of California, and the Samuel L. Warner Memorial Medal, awarded by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. He is a member of the California Epsilon chapter of Tau Beta Pi.

Mr. Shaw has served on the faculty of USC’s Thornton School of Music and the Southern California Institute of Architecture.

Neil A. Shaw is a consultant in acoustics and communication
technologies. His projects in Asia, Europe, Australia, and the Americas include research laboratories and research and development activities in acoustics as well as performance, production, and post-production spaces, sacred spaces, corporate meeting and conference facilities, transportation infrastructure and rolling stock, academic buildings, hospitality, cruise ship vessels, electro-acoustics, and aero-acoustics.

He studied electrical engineering at the Cooper Union and received his BS Engineering and MS Engineering degrees fr =om the University of California, Los Angeles, where he studied with Richard Stern and William C. Meecham.
